Description

What does it mean to be a man or male-identified in the United States? This course will explore how literature and scholarly research address manhood and masculinity. Is there only one way to be a man socially or culturally? Does masculinity differ based on race, ethnicity, and class status? Is masculinity fluid? Are there "masculinities," as opposed to one "masculinity"? Does a continuum of masculinity exist? Is (or should) masculinity only be associated with male-identified bodies? We will read scholarly articles and monographs, view popular media, and engage in discussion addressing these and other related questions.
